FACTS:
  • African elephants are the largest of earths land mammals
  • Asian elephants have smaller and rounder ears
  • Their trunk is used for smelling, breathing, trumpeting, drinking, and grabbing things
  • The trunk has over 100,000 different types of muscles
  • An adult elephant can consume up to 300 pounds of food a day
  • Elephants eat roots, grasses, fruit and bark
  • They don't sleep much and they roam around great distances for food
  • Their weight is 2.25 to 5.5 tons
  • Can live up to 60 years old on average.
  • Females are called cows and males are called bulls
  • Females usually give birth to one calf every 2 to 4 years

Ancient Appearences On Elephants

The elephants name was called a mammut.  In Latin there name is Deinotherium bozasi.  The elephant male is usually 3 meters tall and the female is about 2.7 meters tall.  An elephant is like a hippo because they use to live in water and ate all most the same thing that a hippo ate.  The mammut has been around for about 33-36 million years ago.

Closely Related Relitives To Elephants

Elephants are closely related to Sea cows, Hyraxes,Tenrecs, ardvarks and Elephant shrews. Scientist believe that elephants are related to all these animals because they share similar qualities of their toe nails. Also scientist believe that they are related because of their similar teeth and similarities in leg and feet bones. All of these animals are a part of  the Afotheres group. These are the animals that elephants are believed to be related to the figure below is a elephant shrew.
